We’re adding wellbore chemicals to our product offering – here’s why

Odfjell Technology is strengthening its portfolio with the addition of wellbore chemicals, taking better control of our costs, improving our customer offering, and opening up new project opportunities, as Ian Low, Global Product Line Manager, Well Intervention, explains.

The energy landscape is constantly evolving, demanding innovative strategies and thinking to meet the market’s ever-changing demands. In response, we’re adding wellbore chemicals to our cleaning solutions portfolio. This strategic move empowers us to exert better control over costs and opens doors to new business opportunities.

Supplying wellbore chemicals is something we’ve always offered our customers. But we have done so via third-party suppliers, which means we were at the mercy of competitive pricing and a vast global market. This addition to our solutions portfolio removes the dependency on third-party suppliers and the cost control and supply chain variables that come with that. 

We see the ability to bring cleaning chemicals in-house as an opportunity. Together with our expertise, people and quality tooling, it opens up new prospects aligned with our strategic growth plans.

So, what products can we now offer customers? The chemical products we’ve added to our mechanical tools and filtration are:

Ultra-Max Chemical Cleaner 

• A high-performance chemical designed to remove hydrocarbon residues quickly and efficiently from downhole tubulars, equipment, and casing. 
• Depending on the degree of soiling or contamination, the chemical can be diluted in fresh water, seawater, or brine and pumped as a spacer to remove oil or synthetic-based drilling fluids.
• It can be pumped independently or as part of a spacer train, including a high-viscosity sweep with a base oil sweep. 

UltraWash Heavy-Duty Degreaser

• A non-toxic solution and heavy-duty cleaner for drilling equipment. 
• Water-based heavy-duty cleaner and degreaser that easily cuts through heavy oils, grease, and drill muds. 
• Non-flammable, non-abrasive, and non-caustic formula that eliminates built-up grime and residue on drilling rigs, pumps, and equipment.

We work worldwide, so it was essential that any solutions we added to our portfolio were globally compliant. This isn’t just about cleaning wellbores; it’s about steering the industry toward a more sustainable path. Our wellbore chemicals have received the coveted and internationally approved GOLD classification by CEFAS.  

So, wherever our customers are in the world, we know that the chemicals we provide are safe, compliant and will not harm the environment, and the wells will be as clean as possible. And while there is still a range of regulatory standards across the world’s well operations, we believe the whole industry will move towards these standards in time.
